Early Scan
Available from 8 weeks
Service Description
The Early scan is available from 8 weeks and is to confirm viability, ie whether a heartbeat is visualised, measurements will be taken at the time of the scan to give an approximate idea of gestation. We do not use a transvaginal probe so if you have a very high BMI or a Retroflexed or Retroverted Uterus it may be hard for us to get accurate views. In this case you would either be re-booked for a free follow up scan or referred back to your GP for a follow up appointment with the NHS. Please note we aren't able to refer directly at the weekend and will provide you with a letter for you to give to your GP. It is not possible to do any anomaly checks at this early stage as baby has not finished forming. You do need a full bladder for this scan so you need to have drunk at least one litre of water 45 mins before your appointment time.
